 Critical thinking

a. "Every match is a new opportunity. Put its failure behind and start over again." Does this apply to the Italian football team when we analyse their performance from their failure to qualify for the World Cup Football to their victory in the European Championship in these four years?

Ans: It is true that every match is a new opportunity and one should put all the past failures behind and start over again. Yes, the given quote applies to the Italian football team when we analyse their performance from their failure to qualify for the World Cup Football to their victory in the European Championship within the four years. Italy faced its biggest downfall in football in 2016 and 17 after it failed to qualify for World Cup 2018. This was the first time they failed to qualify for the World Cup since 1958. However, they come back to their form within the period of four years.

On 14 May 2018, Roberto Mancini was announced as the new coach. The Italian football team won 34 unbeaten international matches under the guidance of Mancini. The unremitting effort of the team finally granted a reward for them in the 2020 Euro Cup tournament. They won it by a 3–2 victory on a penalty shoot-out after a 1–1 draw in extra-time against England in the final held in London. They proved that they were the real champions. Therefore, the saying, “Every match is a new opportunity. Put its failure behind and start over again”, perfectly applies to the Italian football team’s accomplishment.

b. When a team plays in a home ground, it gets a huge support from the audience in the stadium. Does this support them to win the match or the players may feel pressure to win and thus lose? What do you think?

Ans: I think it is an advantage for a team that plays in their ground. It is easy for them to follow their regular routine in preparing for and playing in familiar surroundings. As they do not have to travel immediately before the game, it saves their energy that can be used for the game. Besides, the support which players get from the audience in their home ground helps energize them in several situations. I certainly believe that this kind of visual and vocal support helps the team actually win the games.

Ans:

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 10 (Reuters) - Argentina won their first major title in 28 years on Saturday and Lionel Messi finally won his first medal in a blue-and-white shirt when an Angel Di Maria goal gave them a 1-0 win over Brazil and a record-equalling 15th Copa America.

The victory was Argentina’s 15th Copa America triumph and means they draw level with Uruguay as the all-time leading winners.

Brazil came out more aggressively in the second period and as the time ticked on they threw more people forward - and at one point having five recognised strikers on the field. They piled on the pressure on their opponents but even with five strikers on the field they could not get an equaliser against an Argentine defence protected by the outstanding Rodrigo De Paul.
