Quantum Speed Reading Technique: How to Increase Your Reading Speed by 300 % in 24 Hours

Speed reading is a technique through which one can read a book 300% faster than the usual speed. The Internet has eased our approach to knowledge. As a result, anyone can act as an expert by using the browser. Therefore, in this age, the one who can read and learn faster is a real intellectual. As everyone has 24 hours time, the one who can read and comprehend more is prone to success. And this can be achieved through the speed reading method.

There is no rocket science in it. It is a method that can boost the usual speed of reading by 3 times. Speed reading has different steps to achieve the ultimate condition called Quantum speed reading.
  • Identify the obstacles and find solutions to them.
  • Check the current reading speed and set a goal to achieve desired speed.
  • Learn some techniques of speed reading.
  • Practice some exercises of speed reading.
  • Embrace some additional strategies to achieve the goal.
  • Practice speed reading enhancer experiences.
  • Understand the working mechanism of the brain and work in hiking one's brain strength.
  • Follow the 30 minutes rule and follow other required rules.

Identifying the obstacles and finding solutions to them.

First of all you may have curiosity about getting started in speed reading. Before that, you have to make some improvements in your current reading method. By certain modifications in your current reading style, you can achieve speed reading. Generally, there are three kinds of obstruction one may get while reading.

1. First one is Word Fixation, meaning sticking in each word while reading.
Generally, while reading our eyes stick to each and every word in the text, and it increases our reading time. The problems in it can be: difficulty in pronunciation, tough words, and lack of reading skill. Word fixation is the natural phenomenon for the human mind because we are taught that way to focus on a particular word while reading. But, we have to learn to read the entire sentence or even the paragraph at once. Just a single word has very little significance in it. You have to practice reading multiple words at once using your peripheral vision. In the beginning, you can try reading two or three words at once and gradually increase it by practice to make it a habit.

2. Second obstruction is retreating, meaning rereading the same text again and again. Generally, people have a habit of rereading the same line or paragraph while studying, which is not a good one. This is another major obstruction in speed reading. The reasons for retreating are:  lack of concentration or focus while reading, lack of comprehension or natural capacity of the brain. Through memory exercises, healthy brain diets, water, meditation, rest, and sufficient practice, this obstruction can be defeated.

3. Third obstruction is sub-vocalization. Not only it is worse to read by producing sound, but also to read a text with an imaginary sound inside the brain is bad. Normally, people do it while reading which is also called sub-vocalization. To defeat this, we have to keep our mouth shut while reading, and use our full imagination to comprehend the text. Attitude of producing sound inside or outside our brain while reading can be defeated through practice. In the beginning, we can use chew gum for it. However, we may get distracted while doing it as the brain gets involved in two tasks. Therefore, the best option is practice.

The objective of speed reading is not just to skim a book, but also to understand, express, answer the questions, extract the facts, and explain or analyze the text. For that, we have to go through all the steps of speed reading. This content has been referenced from Nathan Armstrong's book Speed Reading. The analysis of other parts will be updated in this blog soon.

Check the current reading speed and set a goal to achieve desired speed.

Author Nathan Armstrong believes that there is a similarity between reading and running. It is because, when we run our brain estimates of a goal to achieve. And, we come to know the maximum capacity of our body to run in a particular period of time, and the additional effort that we have to add on for that. Similarly, while reading we need to know our limitations and the required effort to reach in the maximum. Some people have claimed that they can read a book in seconds, which is a lie. Speed Reading technique does not work like that. But, it can surely multiply the current reading speed in a person.  For example, if you take 6 hours of time to read a book, through the techniques of speed reading you can do that in 2 hours. The skimming and scanning techniques in it can help you to prepare for exam within a short duration.

How to set goals for speed reading?
First of all, you have to measure your current reading speed. First of all, you have to
measure your reading speed. Now, count the number of words you can read in one minute. You can express the count in WPM. The author has brought the concept of Effective Words per Minute EWPM. EWPM depends on how much you can read and understand a text in one minute. Here, remembering does not mean rotting the text but comprehending it. For example, your can read 100 words in a minute but you have no understanding about, it means your reading speed is 100 WPM not 100 EWPM. But if you have complete understanding of it, then you can have 100 EWPM reading speed. Here, what I am telling you is, you have to measure your reading speed in EWPM. Now, after the measurement of your current speed, set a goal of speed you want to achieve. But, be realistic while doing it. For example, your current speed is 150 EWPM, now, you should decide what reading speed you want to achieve. While doing it, think about your abilities. The main formula is your confidence. If you think you can from your heart, you obviously can achieve that goal. While setting your goal, also allot the time for practice and exercises to achieve that. According to the author, you have to give 12 weeks time in average to gain 3 times speed. And while practicing or exercising the speed reading techniques, you have to assign sufficient time. Write your goal in a sheet of paper and paste it somewhere that you can often see. So, that it pushes you to work on the techniques. You should not forget that speed reading techniques are not formula that you learn once and the goal can be achieved. These are the methods that you have to bring in practice always continuously to improve your skills.
